When to go
The northern winter, December to April, is the sweet spot across the Caribbean, the Maldives and much of Southeast Asia — dry, calm seas and low storm risk. Atlantic hurricane season peaks August to October, which is exactly when Caribbean prices bottom out. In the southern hemisphere, Rio and much of Brazil are at their warmest from December to March.

- Check monsoon direction, not just "rainy season" — many islands have a dry and a wet coast.
- Caribbean travel in September is cheap for a reason; take the insurance seriously.
- Reef and snorkelling visibility is usually best in the dry, calm months.
