December is high summer in Rio de Janeiro. Highs average 29 °C, nights stay around 23 °C, and the humidity is the kind that makes you shower twice a day. Rain comes in short, violent afternoon bursts and then clears, so it rarely costs you a whole beach day.

The month really splits in two. Until about the 26th it is an expensive but normal summer city. From then until 2 January it becomes Réveillon: roughly two million people dressed in white on Copacabana beach for the biggest New Year's Eve party in the world, with hotel rates and minimum-stay rules to match.

So the honest answer depends on your dates. If Réveillon is the reason you are going, book the flight and the room by August. If it is not, come in the first two weeks of December instead and you get the same beaches, the same heat and a much smaller bill.

December weather in Rio: hot, wet, and over quickly

Rio in December sits in the wet half of its year, but the rain behaves differently from what most visitors expect. Mornings are usually bright. Heat and humidity build through the early afternoon, a thunderstorm breaks somewhere between three and six, and an hour later the streets are steaming and dry again.

What that means in practice: do the outdoor things early. Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf are best before eleven, both for the light and because low cloud tends to swallow the summit later in the day. Leave museums, churrascarias and the Sunday fair at Ipanema for the afternoon.

Heat exhaustion is the real hazard, not rain. Locals treat the hours between noon and three as time to be in the shade with water or coconut, and the UV index runs high enough that sunscreen is not optional. Current warnings and forecasts come from INMET, Brazil's national weather institute.

Réveillon on Copacabana: how it actually works

Réveillon is the reason December sells out. The city closes the beachfront to traffic, stages free concerts on the sand and fires the fireworks from barges anchored offshore, so the show is visible along the whole four-kilometre curve rather than from one spot.

The rules nobody tells you in advance

• Wear white. It is not a dress code, it is a tradition tied to peace and renewal. Almost everyone follows it, and colours carry meanings: yellow for money, green for health, red for love.
• Get there early. The beach fills from late afternoon. Arriving at 22:00 means walking a long way and standing far from the water.
• Plan the exit, not the entrance. The metro runs through the night on 31 December but is overwhelmed; taxis and ride apps largely cannot reach the area. Staying within walking distance of where you sleep matters more than the view.
• Expect the offerings. At midnight many people jump seven waves and float flowers and small boats for Iemanjá, the sea goddess of Candomblé and Umbanda.
• Book hotels early. Most properties in Copacabana and Ipanema impose four or five night minimums over the New Year window and take full prepayment months ahead.

Beaches in December: which one, and when

Every beach in Rio is busy in December, but they are busy in different ways. Copacabana is the widest and the most mixed, with the strongest lifeguard presence and the most street vendors. Ipanema splits into unofficial sections, and posto 9 is where the crowd is youngest and loudest. Leblon, one bay further on, is calmer and more residential.

If you want space, take the metro and then a bus out to Barra da Tijuca or Prainha. Twenty extra minutes buys a very different density of people on a December Sunday.

Two practical points. Swim where the lifeguards are, because the shore break on the Zona Sul beaches is heavier than it looks and rip currents are common. And leave the phone and the wallet in the room: carry a small amount of cash and nothing you would mind losing.

What it costs, and when the prices jump

The price curve inside the month is steeper than the difference between December and any other month of the year.
